The original inspiration for The Zine Machine came from working with students who were creating physical zines from their InDesign layouts. Through the ‘Make-a-Mag’ system – developed to teach core design concepts, layout skills, and print production basics – students with zero prior design experience can go from blank pages to holding their own printed magazines within two hours.
The biggest hurdle has always been the technical barrier of imposition: getting documents properly arranged for double-sided printing, folding, and stapling. The Zine Machine completely solves this challenge, seamlessly handling single pages as well as the all-too-common ‘exported as spreads’ problem.
Easy Conversion

Spread Management
If your PDF was already exported as spreads (for example using InDesign's 'Spreads' export option), one click tells the tool to split 2-up spreads into single pages before imposing.

Choose to scale pages to 90% and add corner and spine crop marks for trimming full-bleed zines.
File Requirements & The Math Behind Imposition
Important Note: Your document should be a single-page PDF (although spreads can be managed), and the page count must be a multiple of 4 (4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, and so on). For folding and assembling a saddle-stitched (stapled) magazine, a maximum page count of 48 is advised.
Why Multiples of 4?
Each physical sheet of paper folded in half creates 2 leaves, which amounts to 4 printable pages. For example, in an 8-page booklet, Sheet 1 contains Page 8 and Page 1 on the front outside spread, backed by Page 2 and Page 7 on the inside spread. This mathematical arrangement ensures all pages appear in consecutive reading sequence once folded.
Printing & Assembly Guide
Duplex Printer Setting
When printing your downloaded imposed PDF, set your printer to Double-Sided (Duplex) and choose "Flip on Short Edge" (Short-Edge Binding).
Stack the Sheets
Collect the printed sheets in the exact order they emerge from your printer. Do not reorder or flip individual sheets.
Fold & Nest Individually
For the cleanest, sharpest finish, carefully fold each printed sheet in half individually along the center line, then nest and assemble them together in their correct order.
Staple the Spine
Staple along the folded center spine. Ideally, use a 'long arm' stapler (readily available online or in office supply shops for under £10 / $10 / €10) to easily reach across the page to the fold.
